Week 1

  • What did you learn about your capacity to read and appraise original qualitative research? What changed, if anything, following the week’s activities?
  • How will this skill improve your effectiveness as a practice scholar?

I achieved the weekly objective of being able to differentiate between qualitative and quantitative studies. I learned how to know if an article is qualitative and know if it is appropriate to answer a question in practice.   I did this by looking up articles and being able to tell if they were qualitative or quantitative for the weekly posting and for my own personal search on articles for work. I learned that qualitative answers a question but it does not involve things like statistics. The one thing that changed is my confidence in looking up articles. This skill will improve my effectiveness by giving me the skills needed to find qualitative articles that will help guide my practice.

Week 2

I achieved the weekly goal by finding a quantitative article on opioid addiction. I learned that quantitative articles use number, statistics, graphs and are organized. The thing that changed is that I will be able to identify the difference  between qualitative and quantitative articles. This skill will improve my effectiveness by increasing my knowledge of the different types of articles I can read to help my practice and research cause and effect in certain populations.

Week 3

  • What did you learn about your capacity to read and appraise summaries of research evidence? What changed, if anything, following the week’s activities?
  • How will this skill improve your effectiveness as a practice scholar?

I achieved the weekly objective of looking at systematic review in order to support my topic of opioid addiction. I chose articles that used systematic review to look at how we can reduce opioid addiction in practice. I learned that in order to read an appraise summaries of research you should be aware of the commonality in the summaries. Nothing changed following this week’s activity. This skill will help me by allowing me to research different articles on a topic and appraise and summarize for my own research.

Week 4

  • How has the course information influenced your understanding of descriptive statistics?
  • How can you bring this information of statistical analysis to practice?

I achieved the weekly objective by knowing the difference of parametric test vs nonparametric test. The difference that sticks out to me is that parametric assumes something about a population and nonparametric does not assume. This course has influenced my understanding of descriptive statistics by helping me identify the difference in the different types of statistics used such as descriptive and inferential.  I can bring statistical analysis to practice by using certain software when trying to do a statistical analysis.

Week 5

  • In what ways did course information influence your understanding of parametric statistics?
  • What goals will you set in accordance with what you have learned this week?

An example of how I achieved the weekly objective would be the review I did on data that came from a statistical test. The course information taught me that the outcome  is made on an assumption. I will set goals to review statistical test in order to guide my practice.

Week 6

  • What was the most rewarding learning experience you had this week?
  • How could you amplify the effectiveness of your skill in evidence synthesis and translation science?

The way I achieved my weekly goal was by learning that article synthesis is not a summary. I completed my weekly assignment which was an evidence synthesis. The articles I used for my evidence synthesis were on ways to identify, minimize and assist with opioid addiction problem. The most rewarding learning experience I had this week was that self-care is important if you want to care for others as we do in our field. I could amplify the effectiveness of doing an evidence synthesis by reading other evidence synthesis papers. Reading other evidence synthesis papers as well as applying the knowledge learned in this course will give me the skills to write a synthesis paper. I know this will take practice.

Week 7

  • How does the knowledge gained advance your professional formation as a practice scholar?

I achieved the weekly objective of developing a PICOT question by developing a PICOT question for opioid addiction. This course has changed my ways of knowing by giving me the skills needed to find appropriate articles, appraise them, and find ways they relate to my question and helping form a clear PICOT question. This knowledge has helped me become a better practice scholar by giving me the skills needed to find information in order to practice with up to date data. This knowledge is beneficial for giving the best care possible to patients.
