Research Topic
Literacy has an important role to play in shaping the future of the individual due to the direct linkage with employment opportunities. In the United States, about 130 million adults were illiterate (Nietzel, 2020). The research topic is as follows: “Investigating the black adult perceptions regarding the low literacy: A qualitative study”. The purpose of a qualitative study is to provide information about the experiences of low-literacy individuals, specifically black adults. Specifically, black adults face hindrances in accessing the education they need (Willis, 2022). Moreover, the barriers faced in accessing education and the strategies to be taken to improve the literacy rate are explored in the study. The qualitative approach is suitable as a method admit to explore the individual perspective, social context, and emotional impact regarding the topic of low literacy.
Concepts and Target Population
The basic ideas that will be covered in the study include low literacy, challenges in accessing education, and the factors that cause the literacy gap. Barriers to literacy, such as educational inequities and socioeconomic factors, prevent individuals from accessing education (Zickafoose et al., 2024). Also, the particular focus of this study is on how social, economic, and other institutional factors influence the literacy experiences. Addressing diverse factors helps the understanding of how the factors result in low literacy rates among black adults in the United States (Willis, 2022). The core concepts’ interrelationship showed the impact of the barriers towards the literacy experience of the black people (Mimirinis et al., 2023). Thus, the concepts are useful in determining how the different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds directly affect the literacy rate of black people. The target population for the study is the black adults aged 18 years or older in the United States.
Topic Background
Literacy is a basic skill that enables individuals to participate in society and contribute to economic and personal well-being. Nevertheless, the United States has major literacy issues even though it is a developed country. About 130 million adults in the U.S have low literacy skills who are unable to read, write, and comprehend basic text (Nietzel, 2020). The problem disproportionately affects the low-income groups and racial and ethnic minorities.
Low literacy is seen among black people, thus increasing the scope for ongoing social inequalities (Nietzel, 2020). Also, a low literacy rate among black adults prevents them from securing a stable job, which eventually affects their economic stability. Thus, the issue not only affects the people themselves but also leads to enormous social and economic losses that result in declines in workforce productivity (Rochmes, 2024). The multifaceted nature of the adult literacy problem, interacting with social, economic, and psychological factors, makes qualitative research the best fit to understand the experience of the black adults with low literacy in the United States (Lim, 2024).
Topic Rationale
The low literacy in the United States among blacks is a complicated problem that has far-reaching impacts on individuals, families, and whole societies (Willis, 2022). Illiteracy among blacks means a lack of access to work opportunities, which affects economic stability (Rochmes, 2024). A qualitative approach helps in investigating the perspectives of black adults regarding the factors and barriers of lower literacy (Nietzel, 2020).
Qualitative research is a suitable choice for the study because of the exploration of the deeply personal experiences, beliefs, and attitudes related to the problem of low literacy. Through interviews or focus groups, a qualitative approach will enable the researcher to give a nuanced understanding of how black people go about the challenges that have been brought by low literacy (Lim, 2024). The approach has the potential to gain a rich contextual understanding of the barriers and support the implementation of effective strategies to improve the literacy rate of black people.
A Research Question for Each of the Five Methodological Approaches
- Ethnography: What are the black adult perceptions about the literacy gaps?
- Case Study: How do the beliefs and assumptions of the black adults now impact academic life?
- Phenomenology: What are the lived experiences of the black adults facing the socioeconomic barriers in accessing literacy?
- Grounded Theory: What educational theory aids in understanding the concept of the literacy gap?
- Generic Qualitative Inquiry: What are the causative factors for the adults in terms of not seeking higher education?
How Each Methodological Approach Aligns With a Research Question
The ethnographic approach is useful in investigating the perspectives of a certain group (Gertner et al., 2021). The research question is as follows: What are the black adult perceptions about the literacy gaps? Thus, the research in ethnography is aimed at investigating the views of black people about the literacy gaps (Pahl & Rasool, 2021). The approach aids in the evaluation of how cultural beliefs, traditions, and societal norms influence effects on literacy (Pahl & Rasool, 2021). The research question is a good fit with ethnography and portrays a shared cultural perception of literacy gaps in the black adult community. The case study approach is concerned with evaluation regarding the specific insights about a phenomenon, from an individual (Priya, 2021).
The question based on the case study approach is as follows: How do the beliefs and assumptions of the black adults now affect their academic life? Thus, in the approach, there are thorough discussions on the actual influence of beliefs on academic results (Priya, 2021). The research question falls under the category of case study, as it seeks to understand the case of how beliefs and assumptions generate diversity in academic performance, and calls for an in-depth understanding of the definition of a group.
In the phenomenology study, the core idea is to assess the lived experiences of individuals (Bouzioti, 2023). The research question for the phenomenology approach is as follows: What are the lived experiences of the black adults in participating in the socioeconomic barriers in accessing literacy? Hence, the question relates to a phenomenon and refers to assessing the facets of socioeconomic barriers to literacy (Stolz, 2020). Therefore, the research question informs phenomenology and provides profound experiences of black adults who have socioeconomic barriers to literacy. The grounded theory approach is based on existing theoretical concepts to identify patterns in data (Stough & Lee, 2021).
Research questions developed based on the grounded theory approach are mentioned subsequently: What educational theory helps in understanding the concept of literacy gap? Thus, the method helps in understanding the reasons for the literacy gaps and how effective strategies could be put in place to manage the gap using the educational theories (Stough & Lee, 2021). This research question is in accordance with the premise of grounded theory and is based on the construction of an educational theory to explain the gaps with regard to literacy.
The general qualitative approach is a method of the qualitative study that focuses on the exploration of individual ideas and beliefs, which are not followed by theoretical frameworks (Wint et al. 2021). The generic approach depends upon the descriptive data that assists in making informed decisions (Wint et al., 2021). Question for the proposed study using a generic qualitative inquiry is as follows: What are the causative factors that prevent adults from seeking higher education? Thus, the participant delivers the reasons, challenges, and experiences of the participant towards higher education (Wint et al., 2021). The research question relates to generic qualitative inquiry and explains the different aspects of possible factors that lead to lower literacy, but does not specify using a particular theoretical framework.
Conclusion
The research subject is more focused on the exploration of the views of the black adults towards the literacy ‘low’. Core concepts include factors leading to low literacy, barriers to accessing education. Low literacy among blacks in the United States is a complicated problem that has far-reaching impacts on individuals. A research question is developed for the five approaches of the qualitative study. Moreover, the association of the question with the approaches helps in investigating the perspectives of black people through different methods.
