PSYC FPX 5002 Assessment 1 Psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis in Schools and Prison:

Psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis in Schools and Prison
I’ve been passionate about psychology since I was in high school. I had difficulty in school and never showed interest in any other courses. Psychology was the one class in which I really did well. I have studied psychology ever since during my time in college. I transferred to the University of Hawaii at Manoa after receiving my AA in psychology in 2019 and graduated with a BA in psychology the following year. I have been employed as an RBT in Hawaii’s public school system ever since. I work with Invo Progressus Therapy, a company that the state DOE has hired to give pupils ABA therapy. I made the decision to continue my studies and obtain national certification as a psychology practitioner after working as an RBT for around three years and learning more about ABA. After receiving this credential, I want to keep working in an educational environment to get more experience. My goal is to broaden my horizons by applying ABA to kids who are detained in juvenile correctional facilities.

Function as a Scholar and Multicultural Practitioner
As per Cooper et al. (2020, p. 19), Applied Behavior Analysis is characterized as a scientific discipline that use systematic strategies developed from behavior principles to enhance socially relevant behavior. Additionally, experimentation is utilized to find the factors accountable for behavior transformation. My short-term objective is to obtain board certification as a behavior analyst (BCBA). I will begin working with kids in the school context as a BCBA who are affected by behavioral and socioeconomic variations from their peers.
My goal for the future is to broaden the scope of ABA by pursuing further education and gaining experience dealing with a variety of individuals in various contexts. Since the Practitioner-Scholar paradigm is appropriate for learners at the Master’s level, I will use it to accomplish my goal.

The Practitioner-Scholar creates methods for doing thorough evaluation and practical problem-solving. Through the analysis of independently reviewed studies and literature reviews, learners will acquire the knowledge and abilities to recognize current information on the topic matter. They will determine how to successfully measure their operations and apply their acquired expertise to real-world scenarios. Following the completion of my Master’s degree, I wish to pursue further education. If I choose to continue my education and obtain a PhD after becoming a BCBA, I am going to become a Scholar-Practitioner learner and eventually a BCBA-D.
Scholar-Practitioners emphasize the value of actual research about practice environments as opposed to theoretical inquiry (Holthaus, 2020). Their clients’ and their coworkers’ well-being is their first priority. They carefully evaluate how their work will affect the diverse clientele they serve as well as the communities in which they may practice. They continue to possess a variety of areas of ability and demonstrate competent subject matter expertise in their industry. They exhibit their commitment to moral behavior and a multicultural, international viewpoint.

Perspective
Upon finishing my doctorate in Psychology, I intend to submit the necessary paperwork to take the BCBA exam. I am currently employed as an RBT in an elementary school, therefore I plan to stay there after I pass and become a BCBA. Even if I don’t always enjoy my job here, I stay because I want to help the clients we serve feel safer in this environment. I witness numerous insufficiently qualified DOE employees acting unethically and unfairly every day, and their management colleagues never hold them accountable for what they are doing.
I aspire to become a more effective advocate for my clients and my team of RBTs once I have obtained national certification. My dream is to update the special education requirements in public schools one day. Once I get national certification and have more experience, I want to work with a wider range of populations. The use of ABA in a criminal justice context is something that interests me. I want to work specifically with kids in juvenile prison facilities. Prison is a common fate for children from disproportionately marginalized communities.
In the Hawaii Youth Correction Facility, 56.9% of the teenagers were Hawaiian or mostly Hawaiian, per a recidivism study conducted there. at contrast, 8.2% of the juvenile offenders at the prison were Caucasian (Exploring the Recidivism Rate among Minority Women due to a Lack of Resources upon Release – ProQuest, n.d.) Within a year of their release, 68.9% of these teenagers were arrested again, according to this study. According to Webb (Choi et al., 2021), “results showed a significant decrease from years prior in the. Rate of misconduct reports and inmate grievances to the administration.” The program used Applied Behavior Analysis in a maximum-security prison.
Despite my inability to find any recent research on the application of ABA in prisons, I still plan to network and establish contacts in order to support this rehabilitation. I’m hoping to have statistics to support the idea that ABA lowers recidivism rates.

Conclusion
Pursuing my ambition of becoming a psychology practitioner-scholar will pay off in numerous ways. I’m excited to carry on with my studies and work toward earning my national certification in applied behavior analysis. Throughout my career, I plan to continue working with populations that come from a wide range of ethnic, political, and social backgrounds. Whether in a jail or a school, I’ll keep looking for the best ways to comprehend and help the people I work with. I intend to continue my studies and obtain a Ph.D. in behavior analysis while developing into a scholar-practitioner learner after gaining experience in the field.
