PSYC 110 Week 1 Assignment
In my first week assignment, I have been introduced to five major perspectives of psychology that are commonly used in everyday life. These include the psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, and neuroscientific/bio psychological perspectives (Chamberlain, 2019). Each perspective provides a unique approach to understanding the underlying reasons for human behavior.
On a separate note, an announcement was made by the Sussex’s on their official Instagram page in 2020 that they will be transitioning away from their role as “senior” royals and will be splitting their time between the UK and North America (Bruner & McCuskey, 2020).
Overview
According to an Instagram post made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they have decided to transition away from their roles as “senior” members of the Royal Family and carve out a new, progressive role within the institution while becoming financially independent. They intend to split their time between Britain and North America and continue to fully support the Queen (Bruner & McCuskey, 2020, p. 1). The reason for their decision is to have more privacy. However, some individuals may believe that the Duchess of Sussex is causing a rift between the Duke and his family (Daniels, 2020, p. 1).

Behavioral Perspective
There are two psychological perspectives that could be relevant in analyzing the Sussex’s’ decision to step back from the royal family: the behavioral and cognitive approaches. Behavioral psychologists believe that external environmental stimuli influence an individual’s behavior, and that behavior can be conditioned. In this case, a behavioral psychologist might argue that the Sussex’s are not affected by media or public opinion, and that their decision to separate from the royal family is based solely on their own internal desires and motivations. On the other hand, cognitive psychologists would focus on the mental processes involved in decision-making. They might analyze the Sussex’s’ thought patterns and cognitive biases that could have influenced their decision.

Cognitive Perspective
In contrast to behavior lists, cognitive psychologists focus on how a person’s thoughts, feelings, and expectations shape their behavior. Princess Meghan Markel did not grow up in a royal family, so she may have different expectations regarding her privacy and the upbringing of her children. A cognitive psychologist might argue that her decision to move away from the royal family is based on her desire to provide her family with more privacy and independence.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced their decision to step back from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family and split their time between Britain and North America. While some people criticize the Duchess for allegedly pulling her husband away from his family, others understand that it is ultimately the couple’s decision. According to behavioral psychologists, the Sussex’s’ decision to move away may be influenced by external environmental stimuli and their conditioning to behave in a certain way. On the other hand, cognitive psychologists may attribute the Duchess’ expectations and upbringing as factors in her desire for privacy and independence.
