PSY FPX 6313 Assessment 1 Planning for Compassionate Assessments:

PART ONE: E-MAIL
Respected Manager,
I wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I appreciate all of your advice and help. In keeping with our earlier discussion, I’m getting ready to do an intake evaluation for a new client. 27-year-old male Hispanic Lucas Garcia has level two needs. Lucas has been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, binge eating problem, and autistic spectrum disorder.
He presently resides with his younger brother, who is his legal guardian. He identifies as gay, uses an AAC device but also communicates verbally. I have very little experience working with adults, and I have never worked with a client who is Hispanic, identifies as LGBT, or has an eating disorder. In carrying out this evaluation, I want to make sure that I am being culturally humble. I have established target areas, exams, and ways to show client self-advocacy after going over his referral and file.To help me better serve my client, I would be very grateful for any advice or comments you may have.

Goal Regions
Lucas exhibits deficiencies in his social/communication and everyday living abilities. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and binge eating disorder have all been diagnosed in Lucas. Lucas should set a goal to monitor his cholesterol and blood pressure in addition to planning and selecting healthful foods. Despite the lack of research explicitly comparing eating disorders and autism, this area of study has generated a lot of attention because eating problems are often associated with individuals with autism.
Food selectivity, sensory input, social factors, and strict routines are some eating difficulties (Nistico et al., 2022). Lucas’s vocal communication decreased as a result of being bullied at school and having difficulty making friends. He finds it difficult to look people in the eye and interact with them. Additionally, I would like to focus on a social/communication objective where Lucas greets people by looking them in the eye or turning his body in their direction.

Evaluations
An evaluation tool called the evaluation of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) is used to teach people of all ages the skills they need to become independent (The Brainary, 2023). The Independent Living Assessment Protocol, Home Skills Assessment Protocol, and Basic Living Assessment Protocol are some of the AFLS protocols that evaluate various daily living skills (Life Skills Resource, n.d.).
These procedures evaluate abilities such basic meal preparation and consumption, taking medication, and adhering to health regimens. By tracking his blood pressure and cholesterol, choosing healthy foods, and developing his social and communication skills to engage with people in a professional or social situation, Luca can achieve his independent goals with the help of the AFLS. Luca can have a more contented and independent life if he engages in regular physical activity and keeps a good view on his health.
Self-Representation
Lucas resides with his guardian, his younger brother. Although Lucas is self-sufficient in many areas, he and his brother are both stakeholders, need their agreement and cooperation. According to the Capella Compassion Code (2024), we must exercise compassion by being mindful of cultural differences, cognitive levels, concerns, and other relevant variables. Lucas says he wants to get a driver’s license, but his brother is worried about whether he can pass the test.
Involving the client in the decision-making process when it comes to interventions and goals is crucial, but it’s also critical to pay attention to stakeholder concerns. According to the Capella Compassion Code (2024), we have to involve clients in setting their own goals. Evaluating social validity is another technique to make sure we are acting compassionately (Capella Compassion Code, 2024). We want to make sure that Lucas is acquiring talents that are valuable to him and those around him, and that these skills will fulfill important roles in his life.

Part 2: Self Reflection
The project made me reflect on a former client from my undergraduate internship. . The 16-year-old male Hispanic individual needed significant assistance. It was my first experience working with a Hispanic client who was also elderly. The client’s mother expressed relief when I joined the team because the BCBA and the other BTs did not speak Spanish.
Someone on her son’s team was cognizant of the linguistic and cultural differences that affected their family. Prior to joining the team, I was informed that the client’s family was not actively involved in the sessions, nor did they express a desire for home sessions. Afterwards, I understood that this was because nobody had made the effort to establish a bond with caretakers because language barriers have prevented anyone from taking the time to get to know the caretakers.
Although they were aware that they may ask for certain abilities that were important to the client and their family to be worked on, the caregivers did not fully comprehend the objectives that were being worked on. I’ve learned from this assignment how crucial it is to establish a relationship with the customer and other stakeholders so they feel heard and supported.
Additionally, how crucial it is to select objectives that have societal meaning and will significantly enhance the client’s life. As a BCBA, my goal is to establish a solid working relationship and rapport with the families I serve. I will make care to conduct research and/or get in touch with a colleague who may have experience if they belong to a culture that is outside of my area of expertise or if they have a home life scenario that I have never worked with before.
