In my practicum, I had 50 practice hours dedicated to the implementation of a mobile application, which allows patients to send health information to their provider or healthcare team safely. I also evaluated user requirements, developed clinical processes, and converted care requirements into technical specifications under the guidance of my preceptor, considering privacy, regulatory compliance, and interoperability with the existing health information technology systems. I worked closely with developers and clinical stakeholders to specify features that assist in creating an engaging experience with a patient, ease of access, and effortless integration with care processes, a combination of user-friendliness, performance, and data security.

A large share of my time was spent on the user interface, iterative usability testing, troubleshooting connection and performance problems, and integrating feedback from the end user (representative) and my preceptor. I documented bugs and enhancement requests, set priorities, and applied some improvements to lower the friction to various groups of patients and maximize the reliability of data capture.

This practical experience reinforced my mobile development and testing knowledge, enhanced my knowledge of the digital health implementation in the clinical setting, and enhanced my skills to explain technical trade-offs to nontechnical audiences. I also gave an overview of the lessons learned and suggestions for future implementation to continue the implementation processes and involve stakeholders. Practicum ended with recommendations to improve adoption and workflow fit, which can become part of solutions that can facilitate better communication between patients and their care teams.
