The Scenario

I was a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and our unit consisted of 20 beds in the hospital and was dedicated to providing care to premature infants and their families. Our hospital maintained our commitment to distinction and kindness in every aspect of patient care which shows our core values of dedication, partnership, and innovation.

During our daily meetings which were conducted by our unit manager, we used to share information, ask questions, and suggest improvements that can help us before our shifts started. And in those meetings, I understood the power of transformational leadership. Our manager’s role was important in this regard as not only did the manager create a positive work environment for everyone where we felt valued but also helped us to think creatively.

The greatest person who helped with my development as a professional individual was my manager as she wanted us to be able to make the best decisions and gave us feedback that let us improve ourselves more professionally. She put into practice the best scientific evidence and took the lead in improving the quality. She exhibited clearly by experiencing her commitment to the staff’s and patient’s welfare. Thus, she set a good example for others to emulate. She has always been enthusiastic and consistently motivates us to carry our heads high and professionally work alongside fellow staff.

They allow nurses to take part in the decisions and motivate them to understand their role which creates a sense of accountability and authorization(Ystaas et al., 2023).

Let’s take an example of a challenging case in which the probabilities were against us. In this case, our manager not just only provided us with guidance but also inspired us to show our potential and behave accordingly to obtain positive outcomes (Sihvola et al., 2022). Her continued support and reassurance helped me to increase my confidence and helped us to explore the hurdles with determination.

Leaders who follow this approach and promote communication can create an environment for employees where they can easily share their thoughts and ideas (Cummings & Wong, n.d.).. In this nursing field, this aspect is more important as the exchange of information is essential to understanding the patient’s needs and achieving mutual goals and objectives.

Effective communication in the nursing field is not just about conveying information but about motivating employees so that they can show their skills in practice. Transformational leaders know the importance of words and they use them to make employees comfortable, promote engagement, and encourage team members to work together (Ystaas et al., 2023). These leaders can help nurses to take ownership of their work by creating an environment where they are free to share their concerns and proper action is taken about those concerns as it will help to achieve success.
