Question: As a master’s-level nursing student, reflect on how your specialization and practicum courses have influenced your professional identity. What are your goals for future career development?

Answer: The MSN specialization and practicum experience contributed significantly to my professional development because it improved my orientation towards person-centered, ethical, and equity-oriented nursing practice. Coursework and practicum events, particularly the use of motivational interviewing and self-care management methods, allowed me to become more appreciative of the concept of shared decision-making and patient empowerment. Through the practicum, I was able to apply the theory to practice as well as interdisciplinary teamwork and resolve real-world problems concerning health disparities and well-being in the workplace. The experiences changed me into a reflective nurse leader and advocate, in contrast to being a task-oriented clinician. My career aspirations in the future are aligned with this target, and I am keen on becoming a leader on the quality improvement front, encouraging inclusive care methods, and building sustainable and supportive healthcare settings.

Question: How can nurses integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core components of their professional identity?

Answer: Cultural humility, self-reflection, and exercising diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in daily practice can all contribute to the development of an aspect of their professional identity as nurses. When nurses uphold the cultural values of the patients, including their beliefs and experiences on which they have lived their whole lives, consistently, and present an argument for fair access to healthcare resources, DEI becomes a constituent part of nursing identity. These are integrated communication, education based on health literacy, and consideration of social determinants of health that allow nurses to provide equitable and evidence-based care. Moreover, the nurses should also promise to participate in a continual learning process and self-reflection to identify personal assumptions and make better ethical decisions. Nurses can incorporate DEI principles into clinical practice, teamwork, and leadership behaviors through building trust and advancing the principles of justice, and adding to improved patient and workforce outcomes.

Question: Think about a patient-centered care experience in which you applied diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. How did you empower patients to make their own health decisions during that experience?

Answer: In my experience in the practicum, I have implemented the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion as a person-centered self-care management interview with the assistance of motivational interviewing. I made sure to set a respectful and nonjudgmental tone by using active listening to the patient’s issues, respect for the cultural beliefs, and assessment of the health literacy, and then moved on to the part of providing education. The encounter also featured shared decision-making because I collaborated with the patient to identify the realistic goals, and these were consistent with their values and willingness to change. I gave the patient empowerment, being open to present options, asking questions, and supporting the patient in his/her choice of self-care strategies. This strategy increased self-confidence, involvement, and ownership of the health-related choice of the patient, and ultimately helped in the effective behaviour modification.

Question: How can you inspire colleagues to uphold racial and social justice efforts and serve as professional role models in addressing implicit bias at work?

Answer: Nurses can encourage others to uphold racial and social justice by leading by example, portraying inclusive behaviors, displaying respect, and promoting equitable and bias-free discussions in the workplace. I do my best to engage in self-reflection, am aware of the implicit bias, and am responsible for and respectfully communicate with team members of different backgrounds as a professional role model. Participation in cultural competence support through the encouragement of education and the creation of psychologically safe environments in which the discussion of unconscious biases can take place can assist colleagues in understanding that such biases exist and in dealing with the issue in question. Also, the promotion of equitable policies and workloads, as well as promoting shared decision-making, helps to strengthen equity at the organizational level. Nurses can influence the workplace culture because they are empathetic, accountable, and have integrity. When they lead the organization, nurses can advocate for justice and assist in creating a healthy situation where diversity and inclusion are considered and sustained.

Question: What topics interest you for your MSN capstone project? Reflect on opportunities you encountered during your specialization courses and consider your passions within nursing.

Answer: I have several topics related to my interest as an MSN capstone project, especially ones related to person-centered care, health equity, and leadership development. My proposed research problem is informed by specialization courses and practicum experiences, from which I came up with the idea of exploring the role of motivational interviewing in helping to improve self-care management and engagement with patients who are members of different groups. My other interest is in conducting projects that would lead to the implementation of the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the management of chronic diseases and care coordination. Also, it is an attractive field to discuss the well-being in the workplace and the strategies to reduce nurse burnout. These areas illustrate my interest in improving the performance outcomes of patients, nursing personnel, and psychological, sustainable health care provision.
