Reflecting on Nursing Core Values and Ethical Standards

Ethical standards, core values, and patient-centered care are part of a nurse’s professional identity. These values bring light and illumination to the nurses in the provision of quality, caregiving, and non-discriminatory healthcare. Advanced nursing practice also requires reflective practice as they help in making ethical decisions, enhancing leadership, and promoting effective development as a learner (Jenkins & Smythe, 2024). Nurses reflect on their words and values as well as their role in order to improve the outcome of the practice. This paper brings forward a reflection of professional nursing practice, values, ethical issues, and experience in the work with a mentor, peer review, and evaluation in healthcare teams.

Critique of Personal and Professional Practices in the Context of Nursing’s Core Values

My personal and professional practice as a nurse is evidence of a strong belief in good ethical decision-making, patient advocacy, and accountability. I am an advocate of patient safety and believe in confidentiality. Moral principles are another philosophical concept that I accept in clinical decision-making. Nevertheless, I admit that I should find myself more assertive in complicated situations where there is an ethical dilemma or at work when I can feel under pressure. My practice is also in line with the professional nursing standards because I emphasize patient-centered care, collaboration, and evidence-based practice. My values have been tested at times when it comes to time limitations and differences of opinion. Such cases required reflection and consultation with fellow workers in order to have ethical answers. The practice of reflection has led to the improvement of self-awareness and maintenance of professional growth, which ultimately results in the development of the quality of care delivered.

  • Demonstration of Core Values

In my nursing practice, I have expressed the core values by taking repetitive and deliberate steps leading to ethical and patient-centered care. Integrity is also in the aspect of being honest, adequately documented, and being accountable for issues and errors of the clinic. My interactions with patients informed by compassion and nurturing, I have to listen actively and pay attention to their emotional needs as well as individualize care based on their circumstances. Speaking up in the interests of patient safety, informed consent, and working in concert with the healthcare team on issues of unmet needs is advocacy. I embrace patient autonomy by honoring the cultural beliefs, preferences, and informed care choices in care planning. Humility and courage can be seen in the admission of one’s lack of knowledge, asking for advice, and responding to ethical issues in challenging situations. Also, my professional values of humanity and social justice are manifested in terms of providing equal and respectful service to all patients of any background and trying to minimize prejudice and ensure justice in clinical practice.

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

In nursing, diversity, equity, and inclusion mean the celebration of diversity and providing equitable treatment to patients. They include a positive and safe working environment that is respectful. Within my practice, I accept cultural beliefs and health traditions of the patients. I arrange care plans depending upon their communication needs. I subscribe to the doctrine of equity because I advocate for equal access to healthcare facilities. I discuss social determinants of health outcomes. I try hard to keep clinical decision bias to a minimum. My style of language is sensitive and responsive. I change my style according to a person’s needs. I am inclusive in my approach to care through the provision of culturally sensitive care. I also promote implicit bias awareness of collaboration, appreciation, and colleagues. Such initiatives help in improving patient care, trust, and a good working culture.

Professional Organizations Reflecting Personal Nursing Values and Identity

Professional nursing bodies such as the American Nurses Association and specialty-based nursing associations are consistent with my own values and professional identity. These bodies demonstrate the ethical practice through ensuring that there is a set of established codes of ethics, evidence-based standards, and accountability in the nursing practice. Their focus is on advocacy by ensuring active participation in health policy issues, patient safety actions, and the development of the voices of nurses at the local and national levels. They also contribute to professional growth, including continuing education, leadership, and access to up-to-date research. Involvement in these organizations is essential for my professional identity as they support my ethical practice, life-long learning, and ambassadorship of patients and the nursing profession at large (Ferreira et al., 2023).

  • How Professional Organizations Improve Personal Practice

Participation in professional nursing organizations offers an opportunity for me to advance my own personal practice by enhancing my clinical knowledge because of the availability of up-to-date research findings, evidence-based practice guidelines, and continuing education opportunities. The resources help in making ethical decisions by strengthening the professional standards, ethics, and good practices of patient-centered care. Engagement also fosters the development of leadership and lifelong learning through offering mentorship, networking, and involvement in professional projects. Professional accountability is strengthened by engagement in active participation, which ensures self-regulation, adherence to standards, and clinical judgment trust (Ferreira et al., 2023). Generally, the educational resources, policy changes, and professional guidance provided in such organizations make the delivery of better patient care outcomes and help enhance the growth of my confidence and effectiveness as a nursing professional.

Reflection on Ethical Behaviors in Nursing Practice and Leadership

Some ethical behaviors can only be attributed to the nursing profession, such as honesty, accountability, respect for the autonomy of the patients, confidentiality, advocacy, and adherence to beneficence and nonmaleficence. The aspects of caring ethically about my patients in my practice have been to uphold privacy, give truthful information, and ensure that patient safety has been taken into consideration in all clinical decisions. In my interprofessional collaboration, ethical behaviour is shown in such ways as respectful communication, shared decision, and professional response to concerns to aid in the best outcomes. Ethical leadership is manifested in the positive examples set, in maintaining co-workers, and in making ethical speech on behalf of ethical standards, whether in formal or informal leadership (Mostafa et al., 2020). Maintaining ethical conduct builds trust with the members of the team and improves collaboration, thus increasing patient safety due to the culture of accountability and integrity.

  • Potential Solutions When Unethical Behaviors Are Observed

The typical ethical problems that are common in a healthcare facility are the breach of confidentiality, unsafe practices, a lack of proper informed consent, and a lack of professional communication between team members. Mechanisms that can be used to deal with unethical behaviors when they are witnessed are to speak with concerns through the existing reporting mechanisms, consult the institutional policies, and use professional codes of ethics to take a course of action (Cicero, 2021). Increasing respectful professional communication within the field of nursing will allow the nurse to communicate her concerns without aggravating the conflict and still maintain cooperation. As a nurse, I must be critical in maintaining the ethical standard by promoting patient safety, giving ethical examples, and being accountable to myself and others. These measures help to guard the patients and to increase the faith which is held in the healthcare system, and also to maintain the honesty and integrity of the nursing profession.

Reflection on Mentoring Others in Professional Growth and Accountability

I have also had an experienced nurse leader who guided me through my early practice, and this aspect also contributed to my development and sense of responsibility as a nurse. Such a mentoring relationship was associated with periodic guidance, positive feedback, and advisory assistance in complex clinical and ethical situations (McIntosh & Antes, 2025). This experience has allowed me to gain more competencies in the clinical environment, allowed me to better make decisions, and gain better knowledge of ethical nursing. Professional accountability was also strengthened through Mentorship in that reflection in terms of standards and accountability with respect to patient outcomes was facilitated. Altogether, the experience helped me develop personally as it helped me be more resilient, self-aware, and committed to constant learning and professionalism.

  • Specific Examples of Actions That Had Positive Impacts on Mentees

Certain mentoring behaviors that were beneficial to the mentee were giving directions through the complex clinical decision-making process, support in high-stress situations, encouragement to attend continuing education, and skills development programs. Clinical reasoning and ethical aspects doubled the mentees’ confidence in their judgment and made them more clinically competent (Lluch et al., 2021). The emotional support was helpful to reduce anxiety and build resilience so that mentees can remain accountable and focused on patient care. Promotion of professional development led to the feeling of responsibility and desire to learn throughout one’s life. Such measures helped not only for better individual performance but also for team interaction and communication, which improved the overall care quality in the healthcare environment.

Evaluation of Strategies and Methods for Effective Peer Review

Structured performance reviews and collaborative peer review sessions are two of the common strategies in peer review that are applied in nursing practice. Structured performance assessments help in improving the quality of carrying out the process of assessing clinical competency and compliance with standards and patient outcomes systematically. The professional accountability that is promoted through collaborative peer feedback sessions includes the promotion of reflection of practice in nurses and the willingness to take responsibility for continuous improvement (Mlambo et al., 2021). Both strategies encourage ethical practice in the form of transparency, adherence to professional standards, and respectful communication. Constructive feedback is vital in the development of a professional as it helps in recognition of strengths and working out areas of improvement and instilling a culture of learning that builds patient safety and the effectiveness of a team.

  • Benefits and Drawbacks of Strategies and Methods

The strategies of peer review have several advantages, such as improved clinical performance by receiving specific feedback, improved teamwork by encouraging open communication, and the improvement of self-awareness that promotes professional development. The approaches encourage nurses to self-assess their practice and align care to the professional standards. Nevertheless, possible drawbacks include possible bias, awkwardness in giving or accepting feedback, and time in busy clinical practices. The problems can be reduced with the help of standardized assessment standards, the creation of a culture of support and non-punishment, and training on practical feedback skills (Wang et al., 2025). Peer review is also helpful in fostering accountability and improving the quality of patient care if it is implemented in a considered way.

Reflection on an Experience in the Evaluation of Other Members of a Care Team

I had experience being reviewed by a peer as a normal performance and quality assessment in the healthcare team. The evaluation included systematic feedback about clinical competence, communication, compliance with policies, and teamwork. The first step induced a certain amount of anxiousness, but in the end, it brought about professional thought and readiness to change. Professionally, the assessment highlighted strengths and aspects to work on, which improved the responsibility and the requirement to keep on changing (Coman et al., 2022). The experience empowered my skills in receiving feedback positively and using it to improve my practice.

  • Benefits of the Experience to the Care Team and Me

My experience with the evaluation fostered my professional practice since it increased my self-awareness and need to adhere to the clinical and ethical standards. It encouraged greater responsibility and everlasting self-reflection, and this allowed me to define some aspects of the areas of improvement and take relevant changes in my practice. As the care team, the evaluation process helped to improve collaboration in the team by providing more open discussions and mutual respect, and enhanced communication, as well as ensuring shared objectives in the care of high-quality patient care (Griffiths et al., 2020). Comprehensively, periodic review enables the culture of the never-ending improvement, responsibility, and quality, which eventually leads to safer, more effective, and patient-centered healthcare services.

Conclusion

Considering key values, ethics, mentorship, and peer review, it is important to note that the combination of these adds up to the creation of professional identity and the formation of quality nursing practice. All of these components support ethical decision-making and accountability, as well as caring and compassionate patient-centered care. Professional growth, collaboration, and constant improvement are also helped along by mentorship and peer review. Practicing ethically is also an essential requirement to preserving the trust, safety, and integrity of nursing. In the future, further reflection and lifelong learning will allow for further development and professionalism as a nurse professional.
