Evidence-based practice is a widely accepted form of communication used by health care professionals to solve problems and make informed decisions involving patient care (Fernandez et al., 2017). The dying process can put the health care professional in a very delicate situation. While trying to balance end of life comfort for the patient as well as support families or caregivers though these times, the health care professional must have the ability to balance the care and education with compassion. Using evidence-based practice can support the nurse in finding that balance and enable nurses to provide the care, compassion and education required in this situation.

In this assessment, the scenario uses that of a new nurse assigned to a patient that is nearing end of life and needing to be kept as comfortable as possible while also supporting the family that is present. This is the new nurses’ first assignment, she is not confident in her ability to implement evidence-based practice for end of life care and fully support a grieving family that is anxiously at bedside. The focus of this assessment is to identify communication strategies the nursing supervisor might use to encourage the new nurse to effectively research this patient’s diagnosis as well as how to best support the family. Recommendations on how to evaluate credible sources during the research process and the criteria to be considered when selecting the best sources will be identified. Lastly, a list of recommended sources will be provided along with the rationale behind choosing them.
Communication Strategies to Encourage Diagnosis-Based Research
Nurse leaders or mentors have a significant impact on helping develop the competency and confidence of new nurses. Competent nurse leaders will create a supporting and caring relationship, one that will help the new nurse gain confidence and will promote communication and trust. Nurse leaders will motivate new nurses by respectfully and actively listening to concerns, providing positive or constructive feedback to support learning and providing training tools that add to the learning process. Visual training aides and tools can help nurse leaders communicate effectively with new nurses and enhance the learning process (Tuomikoski, et al., 2018).

Credible sources can be identified using the 5 Ws, which stands for the five criteria for evaluating an online source, who wrote this, what is the purpose of the resource, when was the resource published, where is the information from, why is this resource reliable.
The 5 Ws tool is a nice and effective tool to identify credible online sources. However, it is always important for nurses to ensure they are looking in the right places for the resources they choose. It is always important to use evidence-based practice as well as being able to access the hospital library, facility policy manuals and guidelines for research (Key, 2020).

Based on the identifying factors in the 5 Ws model, I have identified five credible online sources. The sources are as follows: the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database by EBSCO publishing, Journal of PAIN and SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT and the Palliative Care Development, Cultural Sensitive Palliative Care, Perspectives of Palliative Care by ProQuest Central, Caring for the Caregiver by PubMed Central, and Not Dying Alone by The New England journal of medicine. These sources provide pertinent
Information for research on end of life cares. According to the 5Ws tool kit, these five sources have been listed in the order of their importance.

Explanation of Why the Sources Provide the Best Evidence
These sources have been chosen because they provide access to reliable articles from well-respected medical journals. These websites and journals provide information on evidence-based practice research pertaining to providing end of life comfort to both the patient and the family. These sources are up to date, credible articles that are backed by evidence and easily accessible.
Conclusion
A competent nurse leader will use appropriate communication strategies to help new nurses use effective evidence-based practice research effectively in their practice. One form of effective research nurses can use to validate credibility of sources is to use the 5 Ws tool kit.
