Collaborative Leadership

High-quality nursing practice includes leadership and interprofessional collaboration as important elements. Reflective practice enables nurses to think and reflect on what they have done in the past, learn and improve on future decisions as they work more efficiently with others. The present assessment examines the impact of the various leadership styles on teamwork and communication in the fields of multiple disciplines using the example of inter professional collaboration simulation, which was conducted in Sentinel U. It also indicates the evidence-based approaches to enhance cooperation and reveals the spheres where a nurse leader can move on and develop professionally.

Scenario

In the Sentinel U simulation, the team had to handle the discharge of an aged patient, Mr. James Carter, who had chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular problems. The cardiologist and pulmonologist worked together when his condition deteriorated to ensure that his blood pressure and fluids were normalized. The nurses were influential in patient safety, communication, and follow-up coordination. In this case, it was noted that patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, should be educated about managing medications and changing their lifestyles to avoid complications. Effective communication and teamwork leadership were needed to facilitate prompt decision making, patient empowerment and improved results.

Reflection on Interdisciplinary Collaboration

As a part of the Sentinel U simulation devoted to interprofessional collaboration, the care team collaborated to discharge an older patient, Mr. James Carter, who had a range of chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular problems. The team comprised the nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and social workers. First, the communication on the medications and a follow-up plan for Mr. Carter was interrupted, which caused a delay in his discharge and a possible medication error. The high speed at which the social worker used to organize transportation and home support services was one of the strengths of the case. The nurse was also crucial in enhancing the safety of patients and the organization of the care plan.

But the misunderstanding between the doctor and the pharmacist at the beginning of the process indicated that there should have been better communication of information. A structure communication method, such as a situation, background, assessment and recommendation (SBAR), would have been a way of avoiding confusion and enhancing efficiency (Coolen et al., 2020). This consideration, in retrospect, shows the significance of effective communication at the right time, role definition, and joint decision-making. These enhance the safety of patients in addition to building strong collaboration and help deliver more efficient and coordinated care.

Comparing Effective and Ineffective Leadership in Interprofessional Collaboration

Effective leadership is also important in encouraging teamwork, trust and making common decisions, whereas ineffective leadership can confuse people, make them disengaged and result in poor team performance. The nurse in the Sentinel U simulation exhibited the transformational leadership style in that she actively listened to Mr. James Carter, was willing to hear everyone in the team, and made sure that everyone was heard in the discharge planning process. This inclusive practice was a conducive setting that enhanced cooperation and resulted in improved patient outcomes.

Conversely, the initially used method of unilateral decision making involved the physician excluding the input of other team members, and it also took too long to coordinate with the pharmacy, thereby exposing the patient to danger. These two opposite cases bring out the distinction between a good and a bad leader. Effective leaders encourage a free discussion, share responsibilities, and do not disregard the experience of the rest of the professionals (Moore et al., 2023). The absence of these qualities of leadership may cause stress, negatively affect the morale of the team members, and lead to burnout. This situation shows that respectful, empowering, and collaborative leadership is the key to the attainment of safe, patient-centered, and well-coordinated interprofessional care.

Best-Practice Leadership Strategies to Improve Interdisciplinary Team Performance

Transformational, servant, and authentic leadership are very efficient strategies of directing interdisciplinary teams, particularly in complicated situations such as the discharge planning of Mr. James Carter. The styles of leadership highlight emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making, and empowerment of team members, which is essential in creating collaboration and accomplishment of common objectives. According to Broome (2024), transformational leadership assists the teams to develop trust, remain innovative, and strive toward a shared vision.

According to Bayati et al. (2025), servant leadership aims at prioritizing the needs of the patients and members of the team over self-interest to achieve patient-centered care. When structured communication processes are adopted by the leader and shared decision-making is encouraged, each discipline is allowed to voice its concerns regarding the process, which enhances psychological safety and collaboration. These strategies enhance coordination, team morale and result in improved patient outcomes and improved organizational performance when used regularly.

Best-Practice Interdisciplinary Collaboration Strategies to Enhance Team Effectiveness

Interdisciplinary collaboration strategies are the best practices that emphasize effective communication, common goals, roles, and respect among members of the team. A structured communication tool such as SBAR would have been useful in the case of Mr. James Carter, where the situation could have been improved by the tool in the following areas: information exchange, delay reduction, and the avoidance of possible medication errors that would have contributed to patient safety (Coolen et al., 2020).

Frequent interdisciplinary rounds also remind the team of the importance of the patient-centered outcomes, reinforce collaboration, and continuation of care. The establishment of psychological safety, when team members are not afraid to ask questions and share ideas, will promote open-ended dialogue and innovation (Dina et al., 2023). These strategies create an environment of trust, accountability and shared decision-making. They improve shared efforts and develop a more organized and efficient method of handling the complicated cases of patients when implemented regularly.

Developing Leadership to Support Best-Practice Strategies

I will enhance my servant leadership capabilities in order to support the best-practice approaches to interprofessional collaboration. Although I align with transformational leadership, I will need to integrate all the qualities of servant leadership, including empathy, humility, responsiveness, etc., to foster psychological safety and promote teamwork among all of us. Developing trust, promoting group decision-making, and engaging in professional care are considered in accordance with the nursing standards, and they contribute to the better functioning of a team and personal development (Bayati et al., 2025).

To gain this leadership style, I will practice mindful journaling, consult mentors who practice servant leadership, and take part in emotional intelligence and relationship management workshops. I will also be an active listener and show appreciation to the team members on a regular basis. Such measures will not only enhance my leadership skills but also create a respectful and working atmosphere that enhances team spirit, work satisfaction, and finally, patient-centered performance, as was the case with Mr. James Carter.

Conclusion

Efficient leadership and teamwork have a major role in enhancing patient outcomes. The case of James Carter put emphasis on the importance of effective communication and cooperation. Being a servant leader will enable me to serve my team in a better way. Continuous education and evidence-based practice will help me in my development as a nurse leader.
