I had a total of 50 practicum hours at Mayo Clinic in the outpatient primary care and specialty consultation environment. The practicum setting was an exposure to a diverse spectrum of complicated medical conditions and was focused on patient-centered, evidence-based care. The entire hours were unpaid and supervised by a certified preceptor and were not included in the employment duties. Within the scope of my practicum experience, I conducted extensive and intensive patient examinations, such as the collection of patient history, review of the systems, medication reconciliation, and physical examination. I worked with my preceptor to develop the differential diagnosis and the individualized care plan with chronic patients with diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and mood disorders. I also had a great experience deciphering laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, and specialty consultation reports to make the proper clinical decision. My practicum hours in preventive care and health maintenance also constituted a significant part of my practicum hours.

I was involved in yearly health checkups, risk checkups, immunization checkups, and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health screening examinations. I also engaged in educating patients about the issues of lifestyle change, medication, diet planning, stress management, and self-management of the disease. The interactions would improve my skills in communication and would promote the significance of collective decision-making and culturally competent care. I also worked in an interdisciplinary setting with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and specialty consultants to organize holistic patient care. The interaction with case discussions helped me to learn more about integrated models of care and continuity of care among specialties. The reflective feedback sessions with my preceptor helped me to review my clinical reasoning, enhance the accuracy of my diagnosis, and pinpoint areas of professional development. This nationally reputed healthcare facility helped me to improve my competence in advanced assessment, evidence-based management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient education in 50 structured practicum hours. The experience provided ample support to my clinical confidence and readiness to work in advanced nursing practice and uphold high-quality and safety standards in patient care.
