Introduction

This paper explores various aspects of advanced practice nursing (APN) in Ohio, including educational requirements, licensure, regulatory demands, and scope of practice. It will also examine the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Core Competencies, highlighting personal strengths and areas for growth, and analyze crucial leadership skills for APNs while proposing strategies for their development.

In Ohio, APNs must meet specific requirements outlined by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). These requirements include admission into a master’s program after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, passing the national certification exam for registered nurses, and holding an active RN license. NP graduate degree programs should be nationally accredited, demonstrating clinical competency and building upon foundational nursing knowledge. Additionally, graduate programs for nursing must adhere to national accreditation standards to ensure core content and education standards are met. NPs must also pass standardized national certification exams to practice and utilize their full range of education, clinical training, and board certification.

Moving on to the NONPF Core Competencies, these competencies provide a framework for NP education and practice. Within these competencies, two areas of personal strength have been identified. First, the “Scientific Foundations” competency involves integrating scientific evidence into practice and applying research findings to improve patient outcomes. Second, proficiency is demonstrated in “Quality Improvement,” actively participating in initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery and promote patient safety. However, some areas require growth. “Policy” competency involves advocating for policy changes to promote equitable healthcare access and influence healthcare delivery systems. Another competency that requires development is “Population Health,” focusing on addressing health disparities and promoting preventive care within communities.

Leadership skills are essential for APNs to navigate complex healthcare systems and advocate for their patients. Three key leadership skills include effective communication, collaboration, and strategic decision-making. To enhance these skills, two strategies are proposed. Engaging in professional development opportunities such as workshops, conferences, and seminars focused on leadership development and communication skills can provide valuable insights and mentorship opportunities. Seeking leadership roles and projects within healthcare organizations or community initiatives can enhance collaboration and decision-making abilities.

After completing a master’s degree in nursing, individuals in Ohio must undergo the licensure process outlined by the Ohio Board of Nursing. The requirements include holding an active Ohio RN license, possessing a master’s or doctoral degree in a nursing specialty or related field, maintaining at least one current national certification in a recognized nursing specialty, and completing a two-hour course on Ohio prescribing law for applicants from other jurisdictions. Applicants must also submit a complete APN license application with the necessary fees. These requirements ensure that APNs in Ohio meet the qualifications required to practice in the state.

Understanding the scope of practice is crucial for new APNs when seeking employment. APNs in Ohio can practice in various healthcare settings and work autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. They are accountable to their patients, the nursing profession, and the state board of nursing and must adhere to an ethical code of conduct. APNs in Ohio have the authority to provide preventive care services, treat acute illnesses and injuries, manage chronic and acute diseases, promote patient wellness, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications and therapeutics, and perform procedures.

However, to prescribe medications, including controlled substances, APNs must complete an approved 45-hour course in advanced pharmacology and enter into a Standard Care Arrangement developed in collaboration with a physician. Ongoing requirements must be fulfilled, such as completing a minimum of 12 hours of advanced pharmacology biennially, maintaining registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and adhering to quality assurance provisions.
