Hi, my name is _________. My practice setting is the acute care environment, and I am an advanced practice registered nurse. I am also interviewing to fill the registered nurse (RN) position and look forward to hiring the candidate who is concerned with patient safety, clinical, and caring excellence. The RN needs to possess critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and communication skills, which are necessary skills that are expected in the acute care setting (Oh et al., 2025). I like the element of teamwork and servant leadership, which aims at not only providing support to patients but also to others to promote the best results for all involved in the care setting.

My key roles in the environment of acute care as an RN would be:

Position Overview: RN

An acute care RN has a significant role to play in delivering high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care to patients with complicated and frequently emergent medical issues. Acute care RNs carry out the assessment of patients, their condition, prescription of medicine, and treatment, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team in order to deliver care provided individually. Acute care facilities vary in the speed of work, such as medical-surgical to intensive care units, where the RNs in acute care are supposed to apply clinical reasoning (Abdalhafith et al., 2025). The RN also reacts to the dynamic patient conditions and records the correct patient data to provide continuity of care.

Along with clinical knowledge and technical skills, acute care RNs should be able to communicate effectively, empathize, and act as a professional when talking to patients, families, and colleagues. They also play a part in patient advocacy, education, and discharge planning to make sure that the patients and caregivers are aware of their medical condition and any related medications, instructions, and post-discharge care. The RNs are compelled to maintain ethical standards that the American Nurses Association (ANA) has defined to deliver effective care to patients (Dellasega & Kanaskie, 2021).

Moreover, the RNs adhere to the hospital policies and safety standards and are also involved in the quality improvement initiatives. RNs in acute care can be required to multitask and focus on a wide range of conflicting tasks without losing their cool or becoming less empathetic. The nursing profession plays a critical role in the performance of the healthcare team and, most importantly, in patient care and well-being.

Interview Plan

I will assess the candidate using the credentials, clinical experience that is directly related to the job, as well as the capacity to undertake the job effectively as an RN in the acute care setting. Efforts in the interview process will include considering the nursing capability and interaction skills. The prospective will undergo a 10-15-minute interview session. The interview evaluation will start with a short introduction, containing 2-3 minutes provided by me to describe how the interview will take place and to ask a few questions related to the job and the responsibilities and accountability of the job of an RN.

Thereafter, I will implement goal-focused questions, which will explore education and clinical practice, and provide safe patient-centered care (Jackson et al., 2022). Specific questions based on the patient assessment, acute care intervention, clinical prioritization, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

The candidate should also be capable of exhibiting skill in dealing with complex patients, interdisciplinary teamwork, and providing quality and evidence-based nursing care in a busy setting (Baek et al., 2023). The questions concerning the clinical situations that indicate whether the nurse is able to use critical thinking will also be posed. The interview will be summarized by a 2 to 3-minute wrap-up, which will assist in summarizing the major points, and invite the candidate to the candidate. I have also worked in the areas of post-operative care, patients in the cardiac monitoring unit, and those with chronic illnesses. In acute care, my work as an RN has enhanced my skills as a critical thinker, and I am capable of responding to high-stress scenarios.

2. How do you prioritize patient care when managing multiple patients with varying acuity levels?

I evaluate all the patients in the initial stages of my shift and prioritize the treatments needed according to the evaluation of the level of their stability, planned treatment, and the patient care needed. I am also well-organized by using good clinical judgment and time management. I use daily communication with the team to work continuously and maintain the safety of patients.

3. Explain how you approach clinical decision-making when a patient’s condition changes suddenly.

I would re-examine the patient, measure vital signs, and pursue emergency measures in the event of necessity. I would also inform the physician at the same time, carrying out some extra patient examination as needed be but documenting the changes. I believe that clinical judgment is necessary in such high-pressure scenarios to be calm.

I collaborated with a social worker and a physical therapist to plan a stroke patient’s discharge. I was involved in drug regimen, family teaching, and follow-up care. We managed to communicate and collaborate effectively to achieve a successful and safe transition plan for the patient.

I communicate with families with empathy, honesty, transparency, and respect for confidentiality. I would like to ensure that they comprehend the condition of the patient and the course of treatment. I would also like to have an opportunity to hear their concerns, and in some cases, engage them in some parts of the care.

Our unit has implemented a new EMR system, and I have attended training sessions and practised regularly to become accustomed to it. In addition, I encouraged struggling teammates. I believe that I have selected nursing as a career due to my willingness to assist people at their most intense times. It inspires me to work harder each day and see patients recover in a way that I have been involved and I have been involved in their health.
