Lynnette
Supervisor, Lakeland Medical Clinic
Dear Lynnette,
I would like to say that I am grateful that I am provided with such a valuable program at Lakeland Medical Clinic. Diversity-related concerns that proved to be a challenge as far as patient numbers and employee-community interactions are concerned are not only a work-related matter, but an enormous ethical concern, as well. I am pleased to be invited to play in such a role of leadership, and I am eager to demonstrate to this committee the capability and the intuition I can add to the development and successful steering of this committee.
I would like to emulate the leadership of Paul Farmer, a globally renowned physician-anthropologist and co-founder of Partners in Health, whose work offers such a model of a transformational approach to leading the delivery of culturally responsive care to underserved and marginalized populations, in this project. The ability to develop trust in spite of the disparities within the communities is yet another excellent aspect of his leadership, characterized by a significant cultural humility, uncaring commitment to health equity, and committed effort to health equity. These attributes are particularly applicable in solving the mismatch between the employees of Lakeland Medical Clinic and the mainly Haitian population that it caters to. As soon as these leaders, such as Dr. Farmer, are able to make people look beyond themselves and focus on a cause, in this instance, the portrait of a medical institution where everyone will feel accepted and valued (Tspanidou et al., 2024).
An element of the leadership of Dr. Farmer, which I believe has had the most impact, is that of cultural humility. This entails self-reflection, being cognizant of shortcomings of a cultural viewpoint, and a sincere willingness to learn with others. Cultural humility does not imply the competencies, but a situation where the various beliefs, values, and health practices are treated with authenticity, but not familiarity (Gleeson et al., 2022). Dr. Farmer demonstrates it with active listening, lifelong learning, and co-creating solutions with the members of the community as opposed to telling them what to do.
As I reflect on this characteristic as implemented by my leadership style, I recognize my strengths and weaknesses and how I need to work on them. It has been a deliberate process of achieving various levels of views through professional development on multicultural communication and patient advocacy. I strongly believe in the spirit of community consultation prior to institutional changes; a philosophy that I will use by making sure representatives of the Haitian communities assume a centre-stage to debate in the committees. In the meantime, I also understand that cultural humility is the process that is ever-evolving and ongoing, and I will be open to continuous learning (Fritter & Shihabuddin, 2024). I show this commitment by being willing to be criticized, as well as being keen to identify the areas of weakness in my knowledge and learn to rectify them by altering the method.
Leading and Nurturing Teamwork and Collaboration
The approach that I would propose in coordinating and facilitating the work of the interdisciplinary committee that will work on the problem of diversity and cultural responsiveness in Lakeland Medical Clinic is the transformational leadership model and collaborative practice, tailored to the specifics of effective work in an interprofessional team of healthcare professionals.
Role, Approach, and Leadership Model
The interprofessional healthcare team is especially suited to the transformational leadership approach, as it is based on the need to inspire a shared vision, develop new solutions, and leverage the individual strengths of team members (Tsapnidou et al., 2024). Given the fact that the committee members will be representatives of various fields like nursing, social work, administration, community health, and community representatives, it is essential to set the example of how each member will be able to share his or her expertise and encourage members to collaborate towards a single objective.
I will use an inclusive, transparent, and strengths-based communication style. I will start every meeting by explaining the purpose of the committee and linking the individual contributions to the greater aim of serving the Haitian community. INC will use several communication channels, like face-to-face meetings, secure online communication platforms, and shared documents, to accommodate various schedules and communication preferences of various parties. In addition, I will show active listening and respectful speaking that will establish a psychologically safe atmosphere, where each member will feel free to express his/her opinion.
The emphasis on intrinsic motivation and commitment to the shared vision, which can raise the degree of commitment and innovativeness of the team members, is one of the strengths of the transformational type of leadership in this matter (Tsapnidou et al., 2024). However, its possible drawback is that sometimes it is oriented on the long-range vision, ignoring the details of the implementation. To this, I would complement the transformational approach with well-spelt-out accountability frameworks and set timelines, so that the committee comes up with workable and timely recommendations.
Facilitating Collaboration for Team Effectiveness
Interprofessional collaboration is not something that happens by itself; rather, it should be a task of design (Gleeson et al., 2022). The committee will work together using the following strategies.
Communication technologies: The committee will be based on a project management platform, which will be HIPAA-compliant (e.g., Microsoft Teams or a comparable secure service) to organize communications, share documents, and work. Asynchronous tools will be utilized to allow the members to make contributions between the meetings, and video conferencing will be utilized to allow those who may not be able to attend the meetings to contribute. Additionally, a shared digital repository will be established to provide members with equal access to all the relevant information, research-based materials, and the records of meetings.
In the case of accountability and decision making, I will first of all ensure that in the initial meeting of the committee, there are clear roles and responsibilities that are allocated to the committee, with roles distributed on the basis of area of expertise. A RACI matrix (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) will be embraced to establish some level of clarity when it comes to ownership of deliverables and reduce ambiguity (Dissanayike et al., 2025). The decision-making process will focus on consensus where possible; in the event that consensus is not possible, there will be a tie-breaking mechanism that is prescribed. Minutes of the meetings will capture decisions and their rationale, which will be distributed within 24 hours.
To facilitate the exchange of ideas and information, I will evoke systematic brainstorming by using the nominal group technique, where each of the members is given the chance to give their ideas equally without the discussion commencing. This can help prevent any postulation of more dominant voices that are more apt to subdue other voices, a common dilemma in interprofessional partnerships. In addition, brief check-ins will also be incorporated at the beginning of each meeting to unveil any emergent issues or news since the previous meeting.
Finally, the members of the committee will review the progress of the team, the success of teamwork, and decide on the changes to be made to the processes at the end of each meeting. This ongoing evaluation is in line with evidence-based approaches of enhancing the performance of interprofessional teams (Gleeson et al., 2022). A good and diversified workforce, clearly laid down processes, and a feeling of responsibility towards the community we serve, I feel that this committee will be effective in coming up with useful and feasible recommendations to Lakeland Medical Clinic.
