Mental health is a severe health issue in the community that can impact overall wellbeing. It is a vital part of our life, and it can negatively impact ourselves and others. I work at a mental health facility in Minnesota as a registered nurse. Many patients have reported that they have been struggling with mental health since their childhood. Some of these patients are criminals, and they are unsafe for the community. Our community has not done a great job recognizing mental health concerns and treating them appropriately. If mental health has taken care of in the early stage, it could have saved many lives for the community. Community health plan needs to be reviewed to resolve the mental health issues.

I used the Summon research engine to identify academic peer-reviewed journal articles. I used keywords ‘community mental health, common mental health issues, and mental health issues, and I used journal articles published within five years. I used Proquest, NCBI, and EBSCOhost databases to access these articles.

This article focuses on unmet needs in the social domain that can pose a severe mental health problem. It may impact a personal relationship. The article I found for this research has the most common unmet need in the social domain. Mental health service users may often face problems of a sexual nature that are either difficult to tackle or awkward and too intimate to discuss openly with professionals. Therefore, special consideration in assessing and meeting sexual needs in clinical practice may be helpful. One of the study’s interesting findings was that service users with eating and personality disorders had a similar level of total unmet needs to persons diagnosed with psychotic and affective disorders. The authors suggested improving mental health services to provide adequate care in the article. This article is relevant because it has focused on the positive outcomes of unmet needs.

Shields-Zeeman, L., Pathare, S., Bethany, H. W., Kapadia-Kundu, N., & Joag, K. (2017). Promoting wellbeing and improving access to mental health care through community champions in rural india: The 0RW1S34RfeSDcfkexd09rT2atmiyata1RW1S34RfeSDcfkexd09rT2 intervention approach. International Journal of Mental Health Systems, 11 doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/s13033-016-0113-3.

This article has good insight into promoting wellbeing and improving mental health. Approximately 20% of the Indian population is affected by common mental health disorders (CMDs) such as anxiety and depression. The authors have found that these disorders are often under-detected and undertreated. A person who has a mental health condition faces discrimination in the community. The Atmiyata program did a great job of promoting wellbeing and reducing mental illness through training community members. These champions were helping to detect mental health issues, providing primary treatment and support, and referring them for further treatment to mental health professionals. Also, they developed an android app to reach out to people who need help with mental illness. This article is relevant because it helps people struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression.

I have learned that if a person recognizes their mental disorder, it may help-seeking treatment in the early stage. Communication is vital in mental health. I learned crucial elements to boost communication skills. In the research, I found that recognizing mental illness early and receiving treatment can significantly improve mental illness in the community. People with mental health problems often face discrimination in their communities, reducing willingness to seek help from mental health care providers. I found that unmet needs can lead to severe mental issues during the research, including anxiety and depression. Last but not least, I have learned that sharing information and exchanging social support helps relieve depression.
