ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Father Jacques Marquette, SJ, a missionary and explorer from the 17th century, was honoured with the name Father Jacques Marquette University in an effort to serve the growing German immigrant community in the region with an accessible Catholic education. When it started admitting its first female students in 1909, Marquette, which had previously been an exclusively male institution, became the first coeducational Catholic university in the world.

At its main campus in Milwaukee, Marquette is divided into 11 schools and colleges, offering courses in the liberal arts, business, communication, education, law, engineering, and many branches of the health sciences. Additionally, the university offers seminars in Washington, DC, as well as communities near Milwaukee. The university offers over 68 doctorate and master’s degree programmes, 22 graduate certificate programmes, a law school, and the only dental school in the state, however the majority of students are seeking undergraduate degrees. The university’s varsity athletic teams, known as the Golden Eagles, play in all Division I NCAA sports and are a part of the Big East Conference.

John Martin Henni, the first catholic bishop of the Milwaukee Archdiocese, established Marquette University on August 28, 1881, with financial support from Belgian industrialist Guillaume Joseph DeBuey. Father Jacques Marquette, a 17th-century missionary, inspired the naming of the university. The newly founded college’s top objective was to give the area’s growing German immigrant population an affordable Catholic education. In 1887, Marquette College’s first five graduates all got Bachelor of Arts degrees. The institution had one full-time lay professor on staff between 1891 and 1906, but many of the classes were instructed by master’s students. By the year 1906, 186 students had received a Bachelor of Arts from Marquette, 38 had received a Master of Arts, and one had received a Bachelor of Science.

After moving to its current location, being linked with a nearby medical school, and becoming a university, Marquette College was formally established in 1907. The university’s College of Communication is presently housed at Johnston Hall, which was the first structure constructed on the new campus grounds. The same year, Marquette University High School, the university’s old preparatory division, separated as an independent organisation. Marquette established an engineering department and acquired two law schools in 1908, laying the groundwork for its current law programme. When it admitted its first female students in 1909, Marquette University, which had hitherto been an all male school, became the first coed Catholic university in the world. There were 375 more female students there by 1916.
