PEPLAU’S NURSE-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP THEORY
Peplau’s theory recognizes the significance of patient’s perceptions to nursing care.

Peplau’s theory highlights patients’ exposures to nurse interactions and how those interactions can affect nurse-patient relationships.

Peplau’s theory placed importance on nursing knowledge and patient perceptions.
(Hagerty, 2017)

Patient-nurse relationship begins
Patient needs are evaluated by the nurse
Nurse implements patient goals and outcomes
Patient-nurse trust develops
PEPLAU’S ORIENTATION PHASE
(Smith, 2020)

JMRY8 Module 2 Peplau Henderson and Orem

PEPLAU’S WORKING PHASE
Patient participation in cares
Patient develops responsibility of self cares
Patients develop skills for independent cares
(Smith, 2020)

PEPLAU’S RESOLUTION PHASE

Patient gains strength to become independent
Patient able to mange own cares
Patient-nurse completion of support services
(Smith, 2020)

NURSE-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP MODEL IN THE ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL
Patients in the acute care setting are adjusting to their current illness and the nurse is retrieving pertinent information all in a short time frame.

Initially they meet as strangers, but their roles develop when nurses provide respect and a positive approach with each patient interaction.

The nurse performs patient assessments, health team collaboration, care planning and interactions during patient cares.

Appling therapeutic communication with patients the nurse can provide reflective and nonjudgmental feedback.

Patients are discharged once they demonstrate disease management and have a plan for recovery at home.

PEPLAU’S WORKING & TERMINATION PHASES
(Hagerty, 2017)

ORME’S THREE THEORIES IN SELF-CARE DEFICIT
Producing Self-cares
Dependent cares
Self-care deficits
(Smith,2020)

ORME’S SELF-CARE DEFICIT THEORY

Orme’s theory of self-care focuses on nurses guiding patients in building self-management for their own cares.

Orme’s theory of dependent-care discusses the patient’s social dependency in cares

Orme’s theory of self-care deficit focuses on gaps in the patient’s ability to perform self cares

(Younas, 2017)

NURSE-PATIENT SELF-CARE DEFICIT MODEL IN NURSING HOMES
The nurse reviews the patient’s ability to engage in self-care demands.
The nurse strives to evolve the patient’s self-care potential.
The nurse assesses the patients reasoning and judgement for completion of self-cares.
The nurse gathers data on how the patient’s cognition, behavior, and functioning capabilities.
The nurse collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, patient, and family to promote self-care attributes and roles in care.

(Hellqvist, 2021)

COMPARISON OF PEPLAU & OREM’S PHILOSOPHIES
Peplau
Psychodynamic perspective on nurse-patient behaviors.
