Hypo 4030 Assessment 1 Locating Credible Databases and Research

 

Nurses need to utilize reliable and trustworthy resources when developing their care plans. While peer-reviewed articles are a great starting point, it is crucial to thoroughly evaluate any online resources to ensure their accuracy and relevance to the patient’s needs. Identifying the most appropriate evidence-based practice (EBP) model can be challenging, as many nurses need to incorporate these models into their care regularly. Providing guidance and mentorship to new nurses is critical to helping them develop effective care plans (Oermann et al., 2020). In this particular case, I will work with the newly employed nurse to develop an EBP model that addresses their patient’s diabetes while promoting the use of credible resources.

Communication Strategies to Encourage Diagnosis-Based Research

Effective communication strategies can encourage nurses to research a diagnosis and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to access resources (Denis, 2020). Strategies to encourage nurses to research a diagnosis:

     

      • SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation) is a structured communication tool commonly used in healthcare to improve the quality of communication between healthcare professionals. It helps to ensure that important patient information is communicated accurately and efficiently (Denis, 2020).

      • Encouraging open and transparent communication among healthcare professionals can help prevent misunderstandings and errors

      • Providing and receiving feedback is essential for continuous improvement in healthcare. Feedback helps identify areas where improvements can be made, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. Regular feedback can help identify problems early on and allow for timely interventions to prevent further complications (Denis, 2020).

    Strategies to Collaborate with Nurses to Access Resources

       

        • Establish clear goals and objectives that everyone in the team understands and agrees upon. This will help ensure that everyone is working towards a common goal and will help prevent misunderstandings or conflicts (Denis, 2020).

        • Clearly define roles and responsibilities for each member of the team. This will help ensure everyone understands their specific tasks and responsibilities and can work together more effectively to achieve team goals.

        • Encourage open communication among team members to ensure everyone knows what is happening and can provide input or feedback. This can be achieved through regular team meetings or informal discussions (Prentice et al., 2022).

        • Create a positive and respectful work environment by valuing each team member’s contribution and ideas. This will help to build trust and foster better collaboration and cooperation (Prentice et al., 2022).

        • Conflicts will inevitably arise within any team, so it is important to address them proactively. Encourage team members to communicate openly and respectfully to resolve disagreements or misunderstandings (Denis, 2020).

      It is important to lead by example and set the tone for the team. Provide clear direction and support to team members, recognize their contributions, and be responsive to their needs. This will help build a strong and effective team to work together to achieve common goals (Johnson, 2023).

      Benefits of Strategies

      Encouraging nurses to research and collaborate can enhance their professional competence and improve patient outcomes (Denis, 2020). Effective communication and collaboration can build positive professional relationships and improve teamwork, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes. The benefits of these collaboration and communication strategies include improved efficiency and productivity, enhanced patient safety and quality of care, increased job satisfaction and staff retention, and decreased likelihood of errors and adverse events (CDC, 2021). 

      The Best Places to Complete the Research

      To find pertinent information for a diagnosis, one would want to access various types of resources such as medical textbooks, scientific journals, clinical practice guidelines, and databases of medical research (Johnson, 2023). PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and hospital libraries are all excellent resources for conducting research. PubMed is a free database that provides access to millions of biomedical journal articles, while CINAHL is a database that specializes in nursing and allied health literature. Google Scholar is a search engine that provides access to scholarly literature, including articles, theses, books, and conference papers (McGill University, 2019). 

      These resources can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easier for researchers to work from anywhere. These resources can provide information on symptoms, diagnostic criteria, treatments, medications, and other relevant clinical information about a particular diagnosis. Nurses need to assess the credibility of these sources by using tools like the CRAAP Test (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose), which can analyze the accuracy and authenticity of the evidence provided (McGill University, 2019). The resources one would want to access to find pertinent information include scholarly articles, academic journals, books, e-books, research reports, conference proceedings, dissertations, and theses. Online databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar are commonly used to access these resources, along with library catalogs and interlibrary loan services. Utilizing these resources within the healthcare setting can be quick, easily accessible, and trustworthy for research completion. Using these strategies, nurses can enhance their clinical skills and research expertise, improving patient outcomes and overall quality of care (McGill University, 2019).

      Justification to Select These Sources

      Credible and up-to-date sources are essential to ensure that the findings are accurate and trustworthy. PubMed, CINAHL and Google Scholar are highly respected resources in the healthcare field, offering access to a vast range of peer-reviewed and scholarly articles. Hospital libraries also serve as valuable resources, offering access to a wide range of print and electronic resources, including books, journals, and databases (Kinder, 2022). The justification for selecting these sources is their credibility, comprehensiveness, and relevance to the healthcare field. The resources are available through these platforms are written and reviewed by experts in the field and have undergone rigorous peer review processes to ensure their quality and accuracy (Kinder, 2022).

      Five Sources to Search for Evidence for Clinical Diagnosis of Diabetes

      For the treatment of a patient with diabetes, five evidence-based sources representing credible and relevant information are mentioned. 

      Sources for Evidence and their Ranking:

         

          • Standards of medical care in diabetes-2022 abridged for primary care providers. This is the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) official set of guidelines for the medical management of diabetes. The guidelines are updated annually and provide evidence-based recommendations for healthcare professionals on treating and managing diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2019).

          • AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors. Diabetes Education. This provides a set of seven key behaviors that people with diabetes can engage in to manage their condition effectively. These behaviors include healthy eating, being active, monitoring blood sugar, taking medication, problem-solving, reducing risks, and healthy coping (American Diabetes Association, 2019).

          • Prevalence and determinants of hypoglycemia unawareness in older compared with younger adults with type 2 diabetes” by Lee et al. (2019) provide important information on the prevalence and risk factors associated with hypoglycemia unawareness in older adults with type 2 diabetes. This article is particularly relevant for nurses who work with older adults and need to understand the potential risks and complications associated with this condition (Aronow, 2019).

          • “Management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes, 2018. A consensus report by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD)” by Davies et al. (2018) provides evidence-based guidelines for the management of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. This article is a valuable resource for nurses who need to stay up-to-date on current best practices in diabetes management. (Williams et al., 2019).

          • PubMed is a credible source for finding evidence-based research articles related to diabetes management and is ranked fourth (National Library of Medicine, 2021).

        Explanation of Why These Sources Provide the Best Evidence

        These sources provide the best evidence for diabetes because they are all published in peer-reviewed journals and are based on sound research methodology (Dupuis, 2022). They offer valuable information on the prevention, management, and treatment of diabetes, as well as on the latest trends in drug utilization, glycemic control, and rates of severe hypoglycemia. Furthermore, they are written by leading experts in the field and are based on evidence-based guidelines and recommendations. Nurses can use these sources to stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices in diabetes care and to provide evidence-based care to their patients (Dupuis, 2022). 

        Criteria Used to Determine Relevance

        The criteria used to determine the chosen relevance and usefulness of an issue for diagnosis and healthcare include the credibility and reputation of the source, recency of the information, alignment with evidence-based practices, relevance to the specific patient population, and accessibility of the information (Bukowska, 2022). CRAAP was used to evaluate sources for their relevance and credibility. The acronym stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. By applying these criteria, one can systematically and objectively assess a source’s trustworthiness and usefulness (Kurpiel, 2023). These criteria help ensure that the information obtained is trustworthy, applicable, and up-to-date, allowing healthcare professionals to make informed decisions and provide the best possible care to their patients (Kurpiel, 2023).

        Conclusion

        The evidence-based practice relies on reliable and trustworthy sources, and healthcare professionals must know such sources. In addition, fostering collaboration and effective communication between senior and junior staff can help identify credible sources of evidence for clinical diagnosis, thereby highlighting the significance of building positive professional relationships. This approach can enhance teamwork, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes.
