HIM FPX 4610 Assessment 3 Health Topic Approval

Health education enhances the quality of life for all people. Raising awareness in the community about health problems and diseases is an important step in developing positive health outcomes. “Health education presents information to target populations on particular health topics, including the health benefits/threats they face, and provides tools to build capacity and support behavior change in an appropriate setting” (March 2015). In this assessment, I will submit three health topics for approval for a 30-minute educational session.

Depression

A mental health disorder that affects mood and may cause an impairment in daily life. Raising awareness about mental illness allow those impacted to express their feelings while receiving support. “Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some point in their life” (American Psychiatric Association). We can begin to erase the stigma by talking about mental health.

Preeclampsia

A serious complication during pregnancy can occur after the 20th week.  If left untreated or unnoticed the mother can develop seizures or a stroke and in rare cases die. It is important to bring awareness to this condition because some women do not develop symptoms or sometimes symptoms are ignored. This condition can be a silent one and progress fast, so an early diagnosis is best for mom and baby to have a positive outcome.

Diabetes

A disease that results from too much sugar in the blood is also known as glucose. There are two types of this condition, type 1 can occur at any age and is mostly inherited. Type 2 is the most common and is related to lifestyle factors. It is important to bring awareness to this condition and its complications to ensure compliance in the population with this disease. Type 2 diabetes can follow a condition known as pre-diabetes, in this case lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and weight management may help to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy” (Feb, 2023).
