BHA FPX 4003 Assessment 3 Attempt 1 Health Care Professionals: Roles and Responsibilities
HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, WHY WE NEED THEM
As the healthcare industry changes & evolves, there will always be a need for healthcare professionals to lead the industry.
Patients need a healthcare professional in order to create a safe, ethical and trusting relationship regarding their health.
The ever-growing pharmaceutical industry continues to have a high demand for healthcare workers to carry on innovations within this field.
In a post-COVID 19 Era, Healthcare professionals are more valuable than ever, paving the way for ways in which to mitigate the virus with new solutions.
THE NURSE PRACTITIONER POSITION DID NOT EXIST ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO
In 1985, a small group of visionaries convened under an apple tree in Pennsylvania to address the growing need for NPs of all specialties to have a unified voice.
They established AANP to fill that need and become The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®.
These perceptive leaders recognized that national action was essential to securing the relevance and durability of the NP role.
Thanks to their foresight, AANP has flourished and now represents the interests of more than 355,000 NPs nationwide. (AANP, 2022).
THE PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT POSITION DID NOT EXIST ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO
The PA profession was created to improve and expand healthcare.
In the mid-1960s, physicians and educators recognized there was a shortage of primary care physicians.
To help remedy this, Eugene A. Stead Jr., MD, of the Duke University Medical Center, put together the first class of PAs in 1965. He selected four Navy Hospital Corpsmen who had received considerable medical training during their military service. Stead based the curriculum of the PA program on his knowledge of the fast-track training of doctors during World War II.
The first PA class graduated from the Duke University PA program on Oct. 6, 1967. (AAPA, 2022)
THE HOSPICE NURSE POSITION DID NOT EXIST ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO
1963-Dame Cicely Saunders introduces the idea of specialized care for the dying to the United States in a lecture at Yale University. (NHPCO, 2022).
This position was a result of terminally ill Polish refugees needing care.
Modern day hospice care evolved from the Roman Catholics simply caring for just the sick to the modern-day palliative care for the incurably ill in institutions as hospitals and nursing homes.
Today this is the kind of care available to those who are terminally ill while maintaining dignity, assistance and guidance.
NURSE PRACTITIONERS & PHYSICIANS, A COMPARISON
Both of these positions saw an increase in demand for their skills to provide care with the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
With a growing senior population, NPs and PAs are playing more of a role in health practices than ever before.
Graduates of these programs will have no shortage of career options, with the location being one of the significant factors. (International Medical Aid, 2022)
Both of these positions became essential to the healthcare field in providing satisfying care to the patient roughly 50 years ago.
